Overview

A seminar of global experts exploring unassisted birth, also known as freebirthing and the motivations and experiences of women and birthing people in maternity care. This event offers actionable insights to enhance maternity services. Expert speakers will use research and case studies to understand why women choose freebirth, examining the influence of traditional maternity care models. The seminar will offer an important discussion about the practical challenges, ethical, and legal implications faced by healthcare providers supporting non-traditional birthing options. Discussions will include developing flexible care plans, implementing supportive strategies, accommodating changes in birthing decisions, and managing transfer between settings and supporting women’s safety and well-being. This seminar aims to deepen understanding of freebirthing and provide healthcare professionals with tools to improve maternity care, ensuring a respectful, safe, and supportive environment for all birthing choices.

This seminar and panel discussion is led by expert guest speakers: Dr Gemma McKenzie (UK), Dr Anna Madeley (UK), Dr Melanie Jackson (AUS) and UK Consultant Midwives Clara Haken and Lisa Sharpe
